Summary

As seen on MasterClass!

The instant #1 New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, #1 USA Today bestseller answers the world’s most complex How do you lead?

Leadership is the most challenging of human endeavors。 It is often misunderstood。 It can bewilder, mystify, and frustrate even the most dedicated practitioners。 Leaders at all levels are often forced to use theoretical guesswork to make decisions and lead their troops。

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY。

There are principles that can be applied and tenets that can be followed。 There are skills that can be learned and maneuvers that can be practiced and executed。 There are leadership strategies and tactics that have been tested and proven on the battlefield, in business, and in life。 Retired U。S。 Navy SEAL officer Jocko Willink delivers his powerful and pragmatic leadership methodology, which teaches how to lead any team in any situation to victory。 This new expanded edition contains a protocol to develop and hone critical decision-making instincts and make them habitual。

It's a guide to corporate politics。 I haven't had a career for long enough to vouch for its efficacy, but I believe the author retired as a Major。 It's a guide to corporate politics。 I haven't had a career for long enough to vouch for its efficacy, but I believe the author retired as a Major。 。。。more

As Stevo’s Novel Ideas, I am a long-time book reviewer, member of the media, an Influencer, and a content provider。 I received this book as a review copy from either the author, the publisher or a publicist。 I have not been compensated for this recommendation。 I have selected it as Stevo's Business Book of the Week for the week of 10/8, as it stands heads above other recently published books on this topic。 As Stevo’s Novel Ideas, I am a long-time book reviewer, member of the media, an Influencer, and a content provider。 I received this book as a review copy from either the author, the publisher or a publicist。 I have not been compensated for this recommendation。 I have selected it as Stevo's Business Book of the Week for the week of 10/8, as it stands heads above other recently published books on this topic。 。。。more

Very good book。 I finished in 2 days。 It provides good insights for how to approach difficult situations with upper level management and subordinates。

If you’re military, law enforcement, or Fire- you will relate to these strategies and tactics。 Even in the business world, this book can held guide you in basic leadership fundamentals。 This book will give you different perspectives from a boss’s perspective, and from the subordinates by giving you examples。 The examples of horrible and successful leadership Jocko gives is something I can directly relate to in the first responder world。 But like I said, you don’t have to be military/first respon If you’re military, law enforcement, or Fire- you will relate to these strategies and tactics。 Even in the business world, this book can held guide you in basic leadership fundamentals。 This book will give you different perspectives from a boss’s perspective, and from the subordinates by giving you examples。 The examples of horrible and successful leadership Jocko gives is something I can directly relate to in the first responder world。 But like I said, you don’t have to be military/first responder to relate to this book。 This can even help you in the business world or parenting。 Bottom line is, it all starts with discipline。 And discipline will give you freedom。 Buy this book if you are young leader, ambitious, and getting after it every day to receive a humble pie on how you might be doing things wrong or even correct。 You will be a good leader from these tactics and strategies- IF you implement them。 Buy this book。 。。。more

After reading "Leadership Strategy and Tactics" and found it to be an incredibly informative and well-written book。 The author provides practical advice and real-world examples that are easy to understand and apply in various leadership situations。 I particularly appreciate the way the book is organized, with clear sections and chapter summaries that make it easy to reference back to。 I feel that this book has been a valuable addition to my leadership toolkit, and I will definitely be keeping it After reading "Leadership Strategy and Tactics" and found it to be an incredibly informative and well-written book。 The author provides practical advice and real-world examples that are easy to understand and apply in various leadership situations。 I particularly appreciate the way the book is organized, with clear sections and chapter summaries that make it easy to reference back to。 I feel that this book has been a valuable addition to my leadership toolkit, and I will definitely be keeping it on hand to reference in the future。 Overall, I would highly recommend "Leadership Strategy and Tactics" to anyone looking to improve their leadership skills and strategies。 I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars! 。。。more

I'm usually quite suspicious of books touting "revolutions in leadership" or "leadership guides" in general, as they often seem to contain a lot of bogus pseudo-psychological knowledge that will do you little to no good in a boots-on-the-ground situation。However, this one has suprised me very positively。 Many concepts this book contains are stellar maxims of leadership, first and foremost the concept of "extreme ownership", and willink absolutely knows what he's talking about。However, one issue I'm usually quite suspicious of books touting "revolutions in leadership" or "leadership guides" in general, as they often seem to contain a lot of bogus pseudo-psychological knowledge that will do you little to no good in a boots-on-the-ground situation。However, this one has suprised me very positively。 Many concepts this book contains are stellar maxims of leadership, first and foremost the concept of "extreme ownership", and willink absolutely knows what he's talking about。However, one issue i have that this book often feels like it's very military-oriented and i don't really see how you could apply some of the advice in this book to a civilian leadership position。 Now, i'm in the military, so i really don't give a hoot, but others might find some of the advice hard to execute。Overall however, a great read。 。。。more

Great book, it’s more of a field manual for what to do/ respond in certain leadership situations and how to act overall。 Will definitely be referencing it going forward

Jocko Willink’s third major book on leadership after retiring from the Navy SEALS, this book was a grab bag of leadership advice, tough guy growling, and completely inapplicable advice for how to lead soldiers in a fire fight。Some advice lurked in the pages that I can see a beneficial for the corporate world, but the book was entirely bogged down by examples that went way too far into the weeds。Compare Willink’s book to The Wisdom of the Bullfrog by Admiral McRaven, and you get a sense for a boo Jocko Willink’s third major book on leadership after retiring from the Navy SEALS, this book was a grab bag of leadership advice, tough guy growling, and completely inapplicable advice for how to lead soldiers in a fire fight。Some advice lurked in the pages that I can see a beneficial for the corporate world, but the book was entirely bogged down by examples that went way too far into the weeds。Compare Willink’s book to The Wisdom of the Bullfrog by Admiral McRaven, and you get a sense for a book that gave advice with SEALS stories that were directly applicable to non-military life。I wouldn’t recommend this book unless you’re easily impressed with tough guys or in the SEALS。 It’s too unfocused to be useful。 。。。more

I was disappointed in this book。 I have loved everything Jocko has written, but this was all regurgitated into a shorter form。 I think this book would be helpful to someone in the military, but other than that, stick to his other books as they are more in-depth, and you get the same information。

Trying to work on my leadership skills and maybe create some value for myself at my job or at future jobs。 I like Jocko's straightforward and honest approach to things and, while I don't have a military background, I do understand his references and they clarify things for me。 Trying to work on my leadership skills and maybe create some value for myself at my job or at future jobs。 I like Jocko's straightforward and honest approach to things and, while I don't have a military background, I do understand his references and they clarify things for me。 。。。more

I’m not really sure who this book is for。 Although it covers a diverse array of relevant topics and questions, the writing fails to get deeper than surface level, often stating (and restating and restating again) ideas that are nearly self evident。 I assumed I would be among the ideal audience for this book。 I am five years into being a Captain for a mid sized fire department in California。 I provide tactical and strategic leadership to men and women during 48 hours shifts and on 14-day campaign I’m not really sure who this book is for。 Although it covers a diverse array of relevant topics and questions, the writing fails to get deeper than surface level, often stating (and restating and restating again) ideas that are nearly self evident。 I assumed I would be among the ideal audience for this book。 I am five years into being a Captain for a mid sized fire department in California。 I provide tactical and strategic leadership to men and women during 48 hours shifts and on 14-day campaign fire deployments。 Not only do I have to provide leadership during typical work activities, but also during the less formal time in between。 We live together。 Eat, sleep, workout, shop, play。 This can be an exceedingly difficult leadership environment, as it constantly challenges norms around ideas of work, boss/subordinate, and professionalism。 It is an atypical and challenging leadership environment, and I welcome help almost without exception。 Yet, I found little to no benefit from this book。 The ideas and structure are there。 Reading the table of contents and introduction, I was genuinely excited to work the book and have my assumptions challenged and pick up on ideas that would push me to be a more effective, dependable, and professional leader。 Unfortunately, I found no such benefit。 Very few of the sections offered sufficient depth to provide actionable information。 Further, most of the sections focused on ideas and information that were largely self evident for any mindful leader。 Most sections left me with a subdued reaction: “I’m glad I’m already do this,” or “I should continue focusing on this,” or “this isn’t the first time I’ve realized I need to make this change, I better make it。” Right ideas in the right directions, just gentle nudges rather than any kind of revelation。 And, perhaps, I have my own answer。 For those really unfamiliar with leadership in any capacity, this book might be of great benefit。 If your ideas of leadership are being formed from scratch, the focus and organization of this writing would likely be beneficial。 Or, perhaps the leader who leads by unexamined technique and strategy would benefit by a structured review of all aspects of leadership。 For leaders who have found success in self examination, being open to criticism and critique, and in basic emotional intelligence, this book is unlikely to be more than a bit of a nudge or reminder。 Remember it’s not about you。 Remember to build social capital。 Remember to be flexible。 Remember to be gentle in building up the confidence of others, and even more careful in addressing egos。 Remember to stand firm in the face of unsafe, illegal, or immoral behavior。 This was my first Jocko book。 The guy seems awesome。 I appreciate the writing, even if I’m leaving a bit disappointed。 。。。more

Listened to the audio。 I am coming to admire Jocko。 This is straightforward and compelling to see how these lessons can apply to my life。 Agree with others that it’s probably not best to just plow thru it like I did (can feel a bit repetitive that way)。 Also seemed like the audience for this is 18-25 year olds who haven’t dealt with workplace dynamics。 And for that it’s awesome。 If you’re outside that, some of it will feel well worn。

TheTeapot

Solid principles, delivered with a hard-hitting military parlance。 Hearing the very author voice these precepts on audiobook made it all the more effective。Delivery aside, the ideas are simple and sensible, worth pondering and internalising for your day to day pencil pushing。

Regularly refer back to it in times of need。 The way it's written is truly like a manual, which makes it both practical and easily accessible。 Highly recommend for everyone, as you don't need to be in an official "leadership position" to be a leader。 Regularly refer back to it in times of need。 The way it's written is truly like a manual, which makes it both practical and easily accessible。 Highly recommend for everyone, as you don't need to be in an official "leadership position" to be a leader。 。。。more

Another great book by Jocko。 I learned about him via his TED Talk he did years back and quickly found out about his podcast。 Following this years later I also started to read his book。 This one, and his other books as well, are easy to read and straight to the point with a no nonsense approach to the main lessons he shares。 I found the book practical and quite easy to understand。 What I liked particularly were the real life examples he gave to real leadership。 This makes it way more easy for him Another great book by Jocko。 I learned about him via his TED Talk he did years back and quickly found out about his podcast。 Following this years later I also started to read his book。 This one, and his other books as well, are easy to read and straight to the point with a no nonsense approach to the main lessons he shares。 I found the book practical and quite easy to understand。 What I liked particularly were the real life examples he gave to real leadership。 This makes it way more easy for him to get his point across and for the reader to understand him。 A great book, one that I would highly recommend。 。。。more
